Tiger Woods wins 75th PGA tour title |

TIGER Woods survived a sloppy back nine to win California's fog-delayed Farmers Insurance Open by four shots - his 75th victory on the PGA Tour. Resuming six clear of the field with 11 holes of his final round remaining, the American was never in any real danger. The 37-year-old's eighth triumph at Torrey Pines equals the PGA record for the number of wins at a single course. Woods's compatriots Brandt Snedeker and Josh Teater tied for second place, four shots behind Woods at 10 under par. Woods had got his final round off to an excellent start on Sunday, carding birdies at the third, fourth and sixth holes, and resumed on Monday in solid fashion, reaching the turn in 33. A birdie followed at the 13th as he calmly two-putted from 52 feet, but having earlier dug himself out of trouble a couple of times after some wayward play from the tee, he bogeyed 14 and double-bogeyed 15 to reduce his lead from eight shots to five. Another bogey on 17 will have irked Woods, and taken the gloss off an otherwise highly satisfactory week's work for the 14-time Major winner at the scene of his 2008 US Open triumph. He finished his level-par round of 72 with a routine par. "It got a little ugly towards the end," he admitted. "I just lost my patience and concentration a little bit." Woods has now won three PGA Tour events seven times - the Farmers Insurance Open follows the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Defending champion Snedeker dropped one shot in the five holes he had to complete on Monday, signing off with a 69 - the same three-under par final-round score as Teater. — bbcsport. |

Assange to run for Australian Senate |

WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange will run for a seat in the Australian Senate during 2013's elections, his organisation announced on Wednesday, with his mother saying he would be "awesome" in the role. WikiLeaks unveiled the plan with a tweet that read "Australia: Julian Assange has confirmed he will run in the 2013 national election for the Australian Senate", just hours after Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the nation would go to the polls on September 14. The 41-year-old's mother, Christine Assange, was delighted. "He will be awesome. In the House of Representatives we get to choose between US lackey party number one and US lackey party number two - between the major parties. "So it will be great to 'Assange' the Senate for some Aussie oversight," she was quoted as saying by the Australian Associated Press. Assange, who announced his intention to stand for Senate last year, has been holed up in the Ecuadoran embassy in London since June, after claiming asylum in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces allegations of sex crimes. Britain has refused to grant him safe passage out of the country. The former computer hacker fears Sweden will allow him to be extradited to the United States to be questioned over the WikiLeaks release of thousands of US diplomatic cables. A later WikiLeaks tweet said Queensland-born Assange would "run on WikiLeaks party ticket". Assange said in 2012 that he was planning to register a WikiLeaks party with the Australian Electoral Commission, The Age newspaper reported at the time. To do so he would require the support of 500 eligible voters, the paper said, adding that if he were elected while still out of the country a nominee would occupy the Senate seat. It was unclear whether being elected a senator would have any bearing on his status in Britain and whether London would allow him to leave the country of his own accord. Despite the allegations against him Assange remains a popular figure in Australia. — AFP . |

Egypt army chief warns of 'state collapse’ |

CAIRO - Defence minister and military chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi warned on Tuesday that the political crisis rocking Egypt could lead to the collapse of the state, as he vowed to protect the country's vital infrastructure, notably the Suez Canal. Failure to resolve the situation "could lead to grave repercussions if the political forces do not act" to tackle it, Sissi said in on his Facebook page. "The continuing conflict between political forces and their differences concerning the management of the country could lead to a collapse of the state and threaten future generations," he said in extracts of a speech to students at a military academy. Sissi further warned that the political, economic, social and security problems facing Egypt constitute "a threat to the country's security and stability". He stressed that "the attempts to undermine the stability of state institutions is a dangerous thing that harms national security and the future of the country," but said "the army will remain strong... as a pillar of the state's foundations." Fifty-two people have died in five days of violence that erupted on Thursday night, as the country marked the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. A curfew has been imposed in three provinces - Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez. The bloodiest clashes and most of the deaths have occurred in Port Said, Rioting broke out on Saturday after 21 supporters of a local football club were sentenced to death for their roles in a deadly football riot last year. Egypt has already deployed troops to Port Said and Suez provinces, which lie at each end of the vital Suez Canal. — AFP. |
