THE Magistrates' Association of Zimbabwe is calling for thorough investigations into the death of former Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Fabian Feshete, who died in unclear circumstances in Chegutu on Sunday.
Mr Feshete who was expected to be buried at his rural home in Nyanga yesterday (Thursday), was said to have been involved in an accident in Chegutu where he was now working following his transfer from Mutare early this year.
MAZ secretary general, Mr Munamato Mutevedzi, said his association was treating the case as murder according to details currently available. He said although Feshete was involved in an accident with a kombi, he was beaten up by the kombi crew and left lying in pain at the scene.
"He was only rescued by a good Samaritan who took him to hospital where he was given a pain-killer before being taken home.
“He died in his sleep. We need to know what really happened and why the kombi crew assaulted him," said Mr Mutevedzi.
Efforts to get details of the accident from the police in Chegutu were fruitless at the time of going to print, but those privy to case said Feshete was beaten up by the kombi driver after the accident.
"The kombi crew accused Feshete of driving recklessly resulting in the accident. He was subsequently assaulted," said a source.
Court officials at the Mutare Magistrates' Courts who worked with Feshete since he was a junior magistrate before being promoted to the post of a provincial magistrate were at loss of words to fathom the death of their colleague.
